What happens when an engineer decides to build the lightest and best performing 1974 Pontiac Firebird he can? Well you get a lot of CAD design, aluminum, CNC’d parts and an amazing amount of custom parts.
When we last wrote about this project in the summer of 2015 the owner was working on finishing the custom front suspension he designed in CAD.
Since then the owner has installed the Pontiac 400 ci V8. The engine has been upgraded with Kauffman Racing heads, custom camshaft, titanium valves and retainers, Carillo forged rods and pistons. The engine should be good for around 500 horsepower.
A modified bellhousing made by owner 15 years ago will allow the Pontiac V8 connect to the T-56 six-speed manual transmission. Since the engine sits so low the bellhousing needed to have part of the bottom removed.
Most of Firebird’s major components have been laid out to improve weight distribution. For example the engine has been pushed back 8″ and the seats are 6-12″ back from the factory location and both are lower than their factory location.
The owner is obsessed with reducing weight and looks for savings where ever he can. Whether it is the removing the excess aluminum from the crankshaft pulley or a hollowing out the custom radiator support.
Even the battery support was drilled out. And speaking of the battery it will be placed behind the passengers seat for optimal weight distribution.
The owner is even designing and building the entire electrical system himself. Each loom is being wired by hand.
Nothing has been left to chance and very little is being purchased off the shelf if it can be made. When completed this will be the one of the most unique and best performing Firebirds on earth.
