When BMW rolled this 1972 2002 out of the factory it had a 2.0 L inline-four engine. Since then some very meticulous Southern California builders completely overhauled this classic and upgraded every component making it a modern performer.
The team that created this masterpiece was Paul Cain, his brother Joe Cain, and Tom Rakestraw. Paul Cain has created several amazing cars and was one of the co-founders of the Legends of the Aubobahn. Joe Cain is a top fabricator who previously worked for a top Porsche restoration shop creating concours winning models. Tom Rakestraw is an architect and close personal friend of the Cains and helped tremendously with the interior design and labor.
Power comes from a 3.0 L M54 inline-six engine that produces 335 horsepower and 316 lb-ft of torque thanks to two custom built KKK turbochargers making 0.6 bar (8.7 psi) of boost. The engine has a custom carbon fiber intake manifold and is controlled through an Autronic engine management system. Weight distribution has been improved to 51%/49% by moving the Getrag five-speed transmission to the rear of the car right before the BMW M5 rear with a Quaiffe torque sensing differential and 3.73 gears.
A carbon fiber hood and trunk lid were created to help reduce weight. Handling was upgraded with a ZF power rack and pinion system and custom valved Bilstein coilover suspension. The brakes were upgraded to Brembo four-piston which are similar to those used in a Porsche 993 turbo. A custom eight-point roll cage was installed into the A, B, and C pillars.
This project was built to such an impressive level it has won several awards such as Best of Show and People’s Choice Award at BMW CCA West Coast Concours 2006, 1st Place Concours at BMW Concours 2006, San Diego Jack Cavanaugh Perpetual Award 2007, SoCal Vintage Best 2002 2009, and Best of Show at Bimmerfest 2010. It also has been featured in countless magazines and websites.
