This little hybrid is called The Ratchet RX-7. The 1988 Mazda RX-7 is powered by a stock Volkswagen VR6 with a Precision 6266 turbocharger running off a Megasquirt EFI system. The transmission is a three-speed TH400 automatic. While out at I29 Dragway it made four eighth-mile passes resulting in times of 7.39, 7.21, 6.94, and finally the best time of 6.79 at 107.7 mph. This roughly calculates to a quarter-mile time of 10.7 seconds at 133.5 mph.

Pretty controversial build. I love it. LS swap everything guys are screaming “Should’ve put an LSX in it”. I’m not a huge VW fan, but I like VR6 engine, they are cheap, rather compact and turbocharging wakes them up really well.
I’m a huge fan of the exhaust tone that comes from a VR6 and have wanted to see a rwd VR6 for quite some time now. I’m very impressed by this build. I can’t however peg what trans this car uses.
Well owner said that it has TH400 while answering facebook comments last Thursday.
Thanks for finding that. I have updated the article.
